CHAPTER 6
Sam was enjoying a deep, restful sleep for a change. At the trilling of the phone, she sat upright and switched on the light. Sonny raised his head to look at her and then flopped again. It was just past midnight.
âGo back to sleep, boy.â
Her eyes took a while to adjust. She glanced at the tiny screen and saw Desâs name which forced her to answer it. âHey, whatâs up?â
âIâve got another one, Sam. Youâd better get out here right away.â
âAnother arson attack?â
âYep. Two dead. Luckily, a neighbour spotted the fire and called the brigade. They arrived within a few minutes to extinguish the fire, after attending another call nearby, however, it was too late for the victims.â
âOh shit! Give me your location, and Iâll get dressed and come over.â
âUgh⦠sorry to disturb you this early, Sam.â
âIt doesnât matter. The address?â Itâs not like Iâm busy, is it? Who needs a good nightâs sleep anyway?
She jotted down the details he gave her and hung up. âGeez, what am I going to do with you? I canât wake Doreen up at this time, sheâd string me up. Iâll take you with me, just this once. Donât go getting used to it, you hear me?â
Sonny tilted his head one way and then the other. She ran into the bathroom, flung some cold water over her rosy cheeks and quickly gave her teeth a brush, aware that sheâd eaten garlic bread and very little else for dinner. It was supposed to be her weekend off, so sheâd thought it would be worth the risk. Des was bound to rib her about the stench when she got to the scene.
Sam flew down the stairs, grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge, attached Sonnyâs leash and bundled her dog into the back seat of her car. âSorry, no time for a wee for either of us. Iâll sort you out when we get there, howâs that?â
Sonny whimpered and lay down, resting his head on his front paws. Sam drove towards the scene, thankful that the village of Camerton was only ten minutes from where she lived. When she arrived, she found the rural lane lit by temporary floodlights. Sam ruffled Sonnyâs head, assured him she wouldnât be long and donned a paper suit. The cottage had been cordoned off. The damage wasnât too bad, not when compared to the first fire, but bad enough for Des to make a connection and to insist on her attendance at the scene.
After signing the Crime Scene Log and putting booties on, she entered the cottage. âDes, itâs Sam, are you around?â
âThrough here, in the lounge. Keep coming.â Des was giving a few members of his team instructions and sent them on their way when heâd finished. The lounge was black, no smoke left in the room, nevertheless, the smell was noticeable all the same. She approached Des who was now crouching, examining the first of the bodies.
âThey were killed before the fire was started, is that why you called me?â Sam asked.
